Sliema started their league commitments with an important win against White Hart. Though it was the better team who bagged the points, the game was far from one-sided and Hotsticks were made to work hard to win it.
Sliema had Imbroll and Plaehn missing. To make matters worse, early in the game they lost experienced player Cassar through injury. White Hart started strong and pushed forward to create havoc in the Hotsticks defence winning a number of penalty corners. Things seemed heading in the wrong direction. Hotsticks waved the danger but they were slow in pushing forward, failed to execute the simple play and made very little movement without the ball. During the first half the game was, all-in-all, a very messy affair.
The second half was another story. Hotsticks took control of the match and played for most of the thirty-five minutes inside the White Hart half. The game evolved more on the right side and this went to Hotsticks’ favour. The all-important goal came early in the second half. From a free hit inside the 23-metre area Grima, Vassallo and Portelli combined well with the latter running into the Dee and placing his shot at the far post. The game was far from over. Hotsticks kept pressuring high but in the dying minutes of the match it was White Hart who forced a number of penalty corners. These failed to create any danger and Hotsicks could claim their first victory.
