Sliema Hotsticks reach Challenge Cup final

Sporting clashes between these two sides always provide a spectacle with the outcome uncertain up to the very end. Tight marking early on by both sides left little space as man-to-man marking prevailed and the teams used lofted balls to bypass midfield. On 30 minutes Julian Zahra popped up in a central position inside the D to send Hotsticks into a 1 – 0 lead which they held until the half time whistle sounded.
Nobody envisaged the fare provided from then on. On 40 minutes Borg Costanzi netted to level at 1-1. Play ebbed and flowed from end to end as Young Stars counter attacked with Luke Borg Costanzi excelling with his runs down the flank. On 57 minutes Hotsticks grabbed back the initiative when Alessandro Amore shot home from the centre of the D to send his team into a 2 -1 lead. But on 65 minutes Martijn Post shot Young Stars level at 2 – 2 from a penalty corner action. The final whistle blowing sending the game into extra time .
Extra time provided one highlight when just before the end of the first period Amore hit the far post when he delivered a tremendous reverse hit effort from the left side of the D. The second period was less eventful and the game ended in a 2 -2 draw sending the match into a penalty shoot out with Hotsticks’ five penalty takers finding the net, in contrast to Young Stars’ three, giving them victory and securing them a place against Qormi in the Challenge Cup Final on Sunday 19th November.

With the hockey season drawing to an end, Sliema Hotsticks have already elected a new committee for season 2013-14 during its Annual General Meeting held on Friday 14 June.

A number of new faces were elected to the club’s committee. These are Michael Bugeja, Shaun Grima and Robert Prentice. Furthermore, Manuel Imbroll returned to the club’s administration after a two-year absence.

The club cannot but thank the members who are no longer on the committee. Among these are long-serving President Mrs Lilyen Fiedler who decided not to contest her post and Mr Mario Lentini who sat on the club’s committee for almost 20 years. Lukas Plaehn and Juan Vella will also not form part of this year’s committee. Their services will be sorely missed as their contribution has brought the club to where it is today.

Following yesterday’s AGM, the members serving on the new committee are the following:

President: Manuel Imbroll
Vice-President: Tony Caruana Smith
Secretary: Keith Scicluna
Treasurer: Ryan George
Fund Raising Officer: Ruth Borg
Co-ordinator: Pierre George
Public Relations Officer: Robert Prentice
Senior Member: Michael Bugeja
Youth Member: Emile Borg
Youth Member: Shaun Grima

Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather, openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.
