Matches between these two teams guarantee intriguing encounters and this was no exception. Young Stars went ahead as early as the first minute when Christian Bonello shot home. They continued exerting pressure on the Hotsticks rear-guard by dominating proceedings in midfield and on 13 minutes Bonello grabbed his second to send Young Stars into a two goal lead. On 22 minutes Hotsticks pulled one back when, on a swift break from midfield, Christian Sammut netted with a strong cross shot from the top left side of the D. The half time whistle sounded with Young Stars retaining their 2–1 lead.

Five minutes into the second half Steve Portelli drove home to level the score at 2–2 as a result of a penalty corner action. Young Stars then exerted considerable pressure coming close to adding to their tally on a number of occasions and not availing themselves of four penalty corner awards around the 50 minute mark. On 58 minutes, the Young Stars custodian kept his goal intact with a reflex save. After Young Stars hit the cross bar on 65 minutes, when the game seemed to be moving towards a draw, with less than a minute remaining, Hotsticks were awarded a penalty corner and Portelli netted to give a 3–2 victory to his team.

White Hart took an early lead when Charlo Sammut shot them ahead in the 8th minute. Three minutes later White Hart’s David Agius pirouetted at the top of the D wrong footing the Hotsticks defence but seeing his shot well blocked by their custodian. The game flowed from end to end with White Hart steady and disciplined in defence creating problems with their fast breaks down the flanks and creating pressure on the Hotsticks rear guard. The half time whistle sounded with White Hart holding on to their one goal advantage.

Events in the second half turned the game on its head. As early as the 36th minute Steve Portelli hit a cross shot just over the bar from an acute angle. Hotsticks, a different proposition in the second half, increased their attacks taking control of midfield but it was not until the 57th minute, as a result of a penalty corner action, that Portelli hit home to level the score at 1–1. Two minutes later Julian Zahra netted with a powerful cross shot to send Hotsticks into a 2–1 lead. Both teams intensified their efforts coming close on several occasions but Hotsticks won a penalty corner on 65 minutes and Lukas Plaehn scored to send his team into a 3 – 1 lead which they held until the final whistle sounded.

The Under 17 team has just finished their league in second place after this weekend’s last league game against Qormi. Even though the game ended in a draw, it augurs well for the future as the majority of this team is less than 14 years old.

Well done Under 17!!

Top of Table Clash Ends in a Draw

February 22nd, 2016 | Posted by Keith in Senior Team - (0 Comments)

The first 2 teams in the league gave local hockey fans something to shout about as the clash lived up to its top billing. The match started at a brisk pace but both teams restricted the movement of opposition’s advances by strengthening their midfields. The first chance of the game fell to Steve Tanti who deflected a through pass slightly over the bar. By the 15th minute, Qormi seemed to have gained some territorial advantage as they penned Hotsticks in their half. In this period they even managed to win the first penalty corners of the match. They seemed to have scored from their first one but the goal was disallowed as Sarcia’s powerful push flick was deemed to have been shot from outside the circle. The LightShop Hotsticks reacted and managed to win some penalty corners of their own but the first half ended goalless.

The 2nd half proceeded on more or less the same lines, only this time, there were goals. In the 7th minute, after a prolonged action on the left, Hotsticks’ Christian Sammut, crossed to Shaun Grima at the top of the circle who flicked a ball for the unmarked Matt Black to tap in at the side of the goal. Qormi reacted, winning a couple of short corners but they weren’t dangerous enough. Hotsticks doubled the score in the 15th minute when a Steve Tanti, Qormi’s captain, tried to stop Steve Portelli’s tomahawk but the ball still trickled over the line.

Qormi tried to react again but their frenetic pace failed to bring results. Emile Borg in the Hotsticks goal managed to save excellently from Sarcia’s and Keith Calleja’s strikes. Hotsticks fell back but managed to mount a couple of counter attacks but the Qormi custodian Mifsud saved well especially from Zahra. These misses proved costly as first Thomas Degiovanni managed to push a rebound in and then from a penalty corner, Keith Calleja found Jonathan Aquilina unmarked who tapped in the equaliser. The game was not over before each team could have nicked a win with a penalty corner each but both failed to score to earn a draw each.
